2015

Knowsley is undergoing a major transformation. Since 2015, the public and private sectors have invested hundreds of millions in significant development projects across the borough. Knowsley has enjoyed some of the highest economic growth in the city region in recent years, making it a great place to live, work and play.

Since 2016 over 2.5m sq ft of new employment space has been created in Knowsley. After completing Symmetry Park in Halsnead Garden Village, this figure is expected to increase significantly.

Despite the struggles of the pandemic, significant investment has been made throughout the borough and the town centre. Since Knowsley Council took ownership of Kirkby Town Centre in 2019, a new 94,000 sq ft retail development has been created, resulting in over 500 new jobs.

Knowsley’s burgeoning cultural scene came into focus when the borough hosted the Liverpool City Region Borough of Culture 2022.

Following its opening in the summer of 2022, the Shakespeare North Playhouse in Prescot has become Knowsley’s cultural centrepiece. The Playhouse will act as an economic and cultural catalyst, bringing new jobs, visitors and investment to the borough. Prescot Town Centre has also undergone major development and has an established night-time economy offering a vast choice of bars and restaurants.

Knowsley Council secured over £15m in Government funding at the beginning of 2023 to support the Halewood Investment Masterplan.  £30 million of investment will be ploughed into the town in the coming years, helping to deliver improved leisure and recreation facilities, sustainable transport connections and an improved retail offer.

2023 also saw the opening of a new railway station for Knowsley at Headbolt Lane in Kirkby, following an £80m investment. The station has improved transport links for the Northwood and Tower Hill areas of Kirkby as well as for Knowsley Business Park.

With a clear vision for the future, the Council is committed to the regeneration of Knowsley. The Council has acquired Prescot Shopping Centre and have entered into an Exclusivity Agreement with Cityheart, as a preferred developer. Proposals have been approved to demolish specific parts of the shopping centre to help attract future investment that will continue to drive the regeneration of the town centre.

Plans which will see Huyton Village transformed into a vibrant centre with a mixed-use commercial district including a hotel, office space, affordable town centre living, and new leisure and cultural facilities have also moved a step closer following the green light from Cabinet to press ahead with the  necessary site demolition and enabling works to get this project underway.

The Symmetry Park development is located in the South of the Garden Village and is delivering new employment space on the site of the former Cronton Colliery – a site which had been largely unused since the colliery’s closure in 1984. It forms part of the Halsnead Garden Village Sustainable Urban Extension.

The development will deliver around 1000 new jobs and support the growth of critical sectors. The strategic location of the site will help meet market demand for distribution, logistics and advanced manufacturing space. In partnership with The Land Restoration Trust, a 65-acre Country Park will form part of the employment site.

In March 2024 Yodel, the first occupiers at Symmetry Park, commenced operations at a new 161,900 sq ft logistics facility. Constrution of Unit 2 (272,000 sq ft) is well underway and expected to be completed by March 2025.

Final plans submitted by Tritax Symmetry have now been approved by Knowsley Council as part of a reserved matters application for the next phase of the development at Symmetry Park, which comprises 495,720 sq ft of storage and distribution floorage and ancillary offices across two warehouses. The proposed development includes associated gatehouses, security facilities, service yards and HGV parking, plant, vehicular and cycle parking, landscaping and associated works.
